Homecoming Week, part 1

It's only Thursday, and wow has this been quite a week! I'll start with the fun stuff and save the not so fun stuff for another day.

Day 1 (of 2) of Delaney's royal duties began last night. She was in the Homecoming Parade. It's fun because the parade goes for about 1 1/2 miles through town and lots of families show up. It goes right through downtown so the shops all decorate and paint their windows and it's a lot of fun school spirit. The town I grew up in never did anything remotely like this when I was growing up, so it's fun to for me too!

Dress #1 won by a landslide, so it's the one she wore. Plus, it was fun that it matched the school colors. Grandma (who's in town, thanks to our crazy week) took her to pick out some new shoes, and she was certainly dressed the part. My guess is she won't own another ensemble like this for another 10 years when she actually goes to Homecoming, and she was thrilled with it all - head to toe!

She was given the roses when we got to our designated spot before the parade began. I tried my best to give her a "Krista" hairdo, and was pretty happy with it, considering how terrible I am doing girl hair.

They also gave her a tiara right before they started. I guess I could have done a better job taking off the tag...oh well, I just noticed once I started looking back through these...

Getting all set to go!

For some reason, I'm sure that every teenager is like a scene out of "Mean Girls". I don't know why, because I am with teenagers all of the time, and love them all. Maybe I watch watch too much TV?

In any case, the Homecoming King and Queen could not have been nicer kids. His name is Kyle and her name is Hayley and the Prince is Jessie. They were all super cute and had fun on their hour long stroll through town!

Delaney took the whole thing very seriously and had this look on her face 80% of the time. I kept trying to remind her to smile - this is supposed to be fun! She'd love it when she'd see someone she knew - she'd smile and wave like crazy, but most of the time it was all business!

They got to throw candy to all the kids along the parade route and she had a blast doing that. They actually ran out of candy halfway through!

I actually didn't get a very good picture the whole night. It was hard to walk backwards and take a picture. Most are blurry. I walked the parade route, on the sidewalk, just to make sure a parent was close by.

It was so fun to see people we knew along the way. Some of those people I know came just to see Delaney. I was so touched by that because, living where we do, we are so far from any family. But, we have wonderful friends who love us and support us just like family would and I feel so lucky that they love and support my kids as if they were their own nieces and nephew. This was a fun evening for Delaney and she was thrilled people she knew were there. Her teacher was even there and I think Delaney was most excited about that!

One of my cute Young Women is the captain of the dance team, so it was fun to catch up to her in the parking lot when the parade was over.

Our neighbor, Megan, walked the whole route with me. She was worried about me, because of some health stuff at the beginning of the week, so she insisted on coming with me and she came stocked with a backpack of waters, to be sure I'd stay hydrated. Delaney looks up to her so much and it was fun to have her there with us all night.

GO DAWGS!

Hear Ye, Hear Ye!

The need has arisen for a royal vote! Delaney was invited to be the Homecoming Princess at our high school's Homecoming at the end of the month. Such an occasion deserves a special dress. We couldn't decide between three, so we're hoping to get some opinions. Please let us know your favorite!

Our school colors are red and gold, and though we don't have to have a dress in those colors, that's how we ended up with two red ones. However, the teenagers at church today assured us it doesn't have to be red. So, what do you think? You can click on them for a better look.

Dress #1 - Black velvet on top, with a red satin "pick up" skirt.

Dress #2 - this white, furry cape looks good with all three and she'll wear it at the football game, when it will most likely be cold.

Dress #3 - This has sequins all over. Ignore the matching doll dress...

Which one is fit for a princess??

Butterfly House

Our local park district has a Butterfly House and it's always on our list of things to do in a summer. This summer was hotter than normal, so we waited for a day when we wouldn't melt, talked some friends into joining us, and spent a morning watching and identifying butterflies.

The boys were much more interested in finding the different species of butterflies than the girls. In fact, the girls were bored after about 5 minutes.

There were a lot fewer butterflies this year than in years past. Delaney's 1st Grade class just went to the butterfly house last Friday for a field trip, and there were just as few. Of course, it never occurred to me to ask why...

Pretty sure...

...there's nothing cuter than 2 year old piggie tails.
